Packing Questions, Field Answers

Short answers to the choices that connect access, protection and handling. Read the relevant guide before applying an answer to your own equipment.

Should I use one large crate or several smaller modules?

Choose by task, handling and access, not capacity alone. Smaller modules can separate tasks and exposure needs, but add container mass and closures. Test the complete loaded arrangement. Start with the packing map.

Does waterproof mean suitable for any immersion?

No. Identify the exact rating and manufacturer’s test conditions. Immersion claims do not establish resistance to every jet, temperature or field exposure. See the rating notes.

Does an insulated case keep equipment warm indefinitely?

No. Insulation slows heat transfer. Without suitable heat input, the contents eventually approach the surrounding temperature. Plan around item-specific limits and exposure duration. Read the temperature guidance.

Can I charge batteries while they are cold?

Only within the battery and charger manufacturer’s permitted conditions. Many lithium-ion products restrict low-temperature charging. Do not assume a warm pouch proves the cells are ready.

How can I reduce condensation on cold equipment?

Follow the device instructions. For suitable equipment, a dry sealed barrier applied before entering warmer moist air and an acclimatisation period can reduce exposure. Moisture already inside still needs management.

Are colour-coded labels enough?

No. Combine colour with large words and short identifiers. Test readability with gloves, your normal lighting and the actual restraint layout.

Should wet and dry equipment share a module?

Only with appropriate independent separation. Give wet returns a designated place, and keep dry reserves protected from repeated openings and transferred moisture.

Is there a universal safe crate weight?

No. Use the limits of the container, transport system and handling procedures. Weigh complete loaded modules and practise the actual team transfer.

What should a packing rehearsal include?

Use the actual load, gloves and restraints. Identify, open, retrieve, return, close and resecure a module. Repeat with another team member and record problems. Follow the rehearsal sequence.

Does this guidance replace expedition training?

No. It is general educational information, not personal safety, medical or route advice. Use qualified instruction, current official requirements and expedition-specific procedures.
