Organisation as a working system
Crates, pouches, insulation and manifests are often considered separately. These notes bring them together. A change in container size affects restraint and handling. A more protective closure may affect opening time. A new thermal layer can obscure labels or reduce usable capacity. The useful question is not simply “How much fits?” but “Can the team retrieve, use and return it under the planned conditions?”
How the guidance is organised
We distinguish four tasks: designing modules, choosing enclosures, arranging cold-sensitive equipment and rehearsing the complete load. Examples are illustrative, not approved expedition inventories. Diagrams explain relationships rather than engineering dimensions. No product receives a field-test claim, rating or certification merely by appearing in an illustration.
When a question depends on a product, use the exact manufacturer’s instructions. When it depends on a region, use current official requirements. When it concerns health, rescue, route safety or regulated transport, involve suitably qualified people. The website does not claim personal expedition experience, professional accreditation or independent laboratory testing.
Reference points, not endorsements
The following organisations, standards and places help locate the questions a packer should ask. Their inclusion does not imply affiliation, approval or a shared operating procedure.
- IEC and IEC 60529: enclosure ingress protection terminology.
- NEMA and NEMA 250: enclosure type classifications.
- DLA ASSIST Quick Search and MIL-STD-810H: environmental test documentation.
- IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and ICAO: context for regulated air transport.
- Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, IAATO and COMNAP: Antarctic governance and operational context.
- British Antarctic Survey, Norwegian Polar Institute and Scott Polar Research Institute: polar research and reference material.
- Governor of Svalbard and Parks Canada: examples of region-specific official information.
Svalbard, Greenland, the Canadian Arctic, Antarctica, Longyearbyen, Ny-Ålesund, McMurdo Station and Rothera Research Station are not interchangeable settings. A system developed for one supported operation may be unsuitable for another journey or transport chain.
